Artist's Comments

"A Sarajevo Rose is a concrete scar caused by a mortar explosion. Mortar rounds landing on concrete create a unique fragmentation pattern that looks almost floral in arrangement. Since Sarajevo was a site of intense urban warfare and suffered thousands of shell explosions during the Bosnian war, the marked concrete patterns are a unique feature to the city.

Throughout the city, explosion marks have been filled with red resin to mark where mortar explosions resulted in one or more deaths."

How very sad, but also beautiful in a way.

I fear my words lack the reach to respond to this subject, except to say thank you for the education and the striking image.

These "Roses" are a symbol of our pain but also a symbol of our will and resistance.
:iconarkady001:
I remember these from the bad old days in '95 and '96 (when they were in the process of being 'created';) and during slightly happier times when I was able to return in 2000/2001. How strange to sit at a cafe and drink coffee or eat cevapi s' kojmakom (I think I spelt that right...lol) in the same streets where we had once run for cover from artillery and sniper attacks...

Where are my beloved 'Interrupters' now? Flown to the far corners of the Earth...
